Traditional Casinos
A house divided against itself cannot stand.
Commercial gambling, or gambling run by professionals for profit, has existed for hundreds of years in the form of Casinos. Casinos are places where the general public is free to bet against a centralized bank, known as the “House.”
Playing a slot machine in a casino is a prime example. When a player wins, the Casino pays-out winnings from their House. When a player loses, the Casino/House captures 100% of the player’s wager as revenue.
All Casino games are constructed with a House Edge, meaning the Casino has a higher probability of winning than the Player. This built-in, statistically programmed advantage drives House returns, such that over a large number of games the Casino will win more money than it loses, and its House will grow.
House returns are extremely lucrative, generating hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue each year for casino operators. Casinos may be in the business of gambling, but the Casino model itself is not a gambling business, it’s statistics.
Access to these lucrative House returns has traditionally been limited to Casino operators and their investors. However, blockchain offers an opportunity to separate the House from the Casino and to democratize access to House returns. This is what we’ve done at Qupaca.
